Tikal

DanD, JimG, Kieron, Ryan

Kieron and DanD taught JimG and Ryan to play Tikal. OMG! You mean there is an SdJ winner that JimG hasn't played?!? Alas, sad but true. Actually, there are a couple more but he's working his way through them! K and D explain the rules and we start playing. The first volcano hits the table on turn 3. Jim decides to win the bid and take the volcano but pays too much and is lagging behind the rest after the first scoring round. Play continues with Kieron building a considerable lead in treasures. Dan builds a couple of nice looking temples including one worth 10 by the 3rd scoring round. Ryan and Jim concentrate mostly on temples. Ryan acquires only 3 treasures the entire game but they turn out to be the same 3 so he scores 6 points every scoring round but the first. Ryan jumps out to a sizable lead in the middle of the game. In the 3rd scoring round, Ryan relieves some pressure at a temple he and Jim are both contesting. This allows Jim to move his leader from that temple over to the 10 that Dan built and take control of it. This allowed Jim to get back into the game. Unfortunately for Dan, he had to spend resources to retake that temple, significantly depressing his score for that turn. At this stage, Kieron and Ryan were very close, but Kieron's point generation was picking up while Ryan's was leveling off. We had one or 2 more tile placement turns and scored the final round. Final standings were Kieron (110+), Ryan (105+), Jim (100+), Dan (80+).

Havoc: The Hundred Years War

In between turns of Tikal, JimG taught the Pirate's Cove table how to play Havoc: The Hundred Years War. Havoc is a card collection game where players are collecting cards to create the best sets of cards to use in the battles that occur during the game. The value of the sets follow the same value as poker hands with additional combinations to allow for a maximum set size of 6 cards per battle. Players use their turn collecting cards to go with what is already in their hand until someone cries, "Havoc!" That individual drops at least 2 cards on the table to start the next battle. Anyone that wants to participate also drops at least 2 cards on the table. Anyone that stays out of the battle gets to draw 1 card. Play continues around the table with players contributing at least 1 card to the battle until all players in the battle pass. The player with the best hand face up on the table wins the battle and gets the 1st place points for that battle. The 2nd best hand gets the points for 2nd place, etc., until all the points have been awarded. The game continues as before with players collecting cards until somebody cries, "Havoc," again. There are a few other things that go on in the game but that's the basic idea.
